Our Mandate

The Mandate

In 1992, the Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine was established within the Ministry of Health. Traditional Medicine has since become an integral part of the Ministry of Health’s work plans. The Traditional Medicine Practice Act (Act 575) was enacted in 2000 to oversee and regulate the practice of Traditional medicine. Although the Traditional Medicine Practice Council was not initially formed, the secretariat for the council was established in 2004 to lay the groundwork for its formation. The Traditional Medicine Practice Council was eventually established and inaugurated on April 9, 2010. This milestone has paved the way for the legal promotion, education, development, regulation, and supervision of Traditional and Alternative Medical Practice in Ghana.
